Choosing the right GPS Unit

Handheld GPS units come in all shapes and sizes. People are constantly asking which the best unit for their needs. Depending on which electronic flight bag or flight tracking software you are using, the choice could be rather obvious. For example, if you use the Garmin Pilot application, a Garmin GPS unit would probably be the logical choice. It is best to check the compatibility first of the electronic flight bag application you are using.

There are really two different kinds of handheld GPS units

Multi-function display (MFD):

These type of units display all the information on the unit themselves. They will display your position on your route. Sometimes with add-ons, you can also get weather, traffic, and approach plates overlaid on the display as well. The price for these units is anywhere from $600-$1,500. Examples of these units include the Garmin Aera 660, the GPSMAP 696, and the Aera 796. We offer MFD GPS units at Marvgolden.com.

Bluetooth-Connected units:

The second type of unit is a device that would be placed in the cockpit and connect to your tablet via Bluetooth. It then displays the necessary data through whatever application you are using. It provides the signal and allow the features of the application to function. With certain electronic flight bag applications, the GPS signal allows the pilot to display their location on the highlighted route as well as an attitude heading and reference system (AHRS). Other units provide weather and traffic information to the pilot. This type of unit is generally less expensive. They run anywhere from $90-$700 depending on what features you might want. Examples of this type of GPS include the Dual brand units, the Garmin GLO, GDL 50 series, the Stratus series, and the Bad Elf brand units. You can find many of our bluetooth-connected GPS Units here.
